Design Your Own Fall Creativity Ritual (+ printable guide)

At the beginning of each season, I like to design a new creativity ritual for myself.

The purpose is two-fold: One is to plan out my season, including what I want to do creatively as well as my own personal development goals, and the other piece of this is that I’m designing a ritual that I can come back to throughout the season to prepare myself for any creative act. For instance, before sitting down to write or to paint, I’ll use elements of this ritual to get myself inspired and tapped into my creative power before I begin.

The creativity ritual process is something I teach in more detail in the Inner Muse membership. In fact, I have an entire video workshop dedicated to this available free to all members! You can learn more about the membership and get on the waitlist here.

Before getting started, you’ll want to download your printable guide so that you can reference your worksheets and get started designing your own ritual! Get the guide here.

What is a creativity ritual?

To get started, let’s first look at the definition of a ritual: A religious or solemn ceremony consisting of a series of actions performed according to a prescribed order.

I like to think of a ritual as a set of things that we do in order to evoke a feeling or meaning into our lives. You are likely already familiar with morning and evening rituals, as a series of habits you might use to either start or end your day in a way that makes you feel good.

A ritual is one of my favorite ways to tap into your Inner Muse, or your highest creative self. I’ll use this ritual before I want to get creative. For instance, before sitting down to write or to paint, I’ll do this ritual to get myself inspired and tapped into my creative power before I begin. And I honestly, I’ll just do it anytime I want to lift my mood or give myself a spiritual boost.

The Ritual Elements

There are nine elements that you can include in your ritual: Body, Mind, Scent, Taste, Wear, Listen, and Altar.

BODY

How can you connect to your body? I generally like to begin my ritual with this, no matter what the ritual is for. In the video, I share a mindful walk as part of my creativity ritual for this fall season.

MIND

I also like to do something to calm or ease my mind as part of the ritual. Most of the time, this would be a meditation.

SCENT

Scent is a very powerful way to evoke a feeling or get inspired! This season, I’m using copal incense as part of my ritual. By simply repeating the scent each time I perform this ritual, I begin to associate it with the overall state of mind the ritual is intended to bring. You can also use a candle, a perfume, a room spray, an essential oil, or potpourri.

TASTE

This fall, I’m enjoying a golden milk (turmeric) latte as part of my ritual. Watch the video above to see how I make it! It’s super simple: I begin by heating up a cup of coconut milk, or milk of your choice. I add some fresh turmeric and ginger, and a little nutmeg. I let it simmer and add manuka honey to taste, along with a tiny sprinkle of pink sea salt. I blend it all together in my Vitamix (you can let it simmer and strain it if you don’t have one) and that’s it! I love the vibrant, golden color – so perfect for fall – and of course, it’s filled with antioxidants and nourishment.

WEAR

What can you wear to tap into your Inner Muse? Consider an article of clothing that makes you feel uniquely you – it can be a print or pattern, or a color, a favorite pair of jeans, a piece of jewelry, or even a lipstick color!

LISTEN

Choose a creativity anthem or playlist for the season! Maybe it’s a category of music, or a particular album you want to play.

ALTAR

Here is where you’ll add some objects to make a little creativity altar for yourself. I always like to include a living plant or flowers here, as well as crystals!

The Creative Planner

Once I’ve got my ritual down, I like to do a little creative planning session at the start of each season. I like to simply think through all of the things I want to accomplish, from art I want to create to projects I want to get done around the house. I’ll include books I want to read, trips I want to take, and pretty much anything else I want to happen in my life for the next few months!

One thing I always like to commit to is trying something new, in an effort to get out of my comfort zone! Otherwise I find it’s all too easy to get caught up in the day-to-day chores of life (and, yes… Netflix and social media). How can you ensure you’re always growing and trying new things? Commit to doing something you’ve always wanted to do each season to ensure you’re living the life you want to live.
